Mandatory Coverages Overview

Florida is one of the few “no fault states” which means that your own insurance policy will pay for any injuries to yourself and passengers in your car, regardless who caused the accident. Florida mandates two coverages that must be maintained at all times:

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – minimum coverage required is $10,000.

This coverage is designed to pay for injuries caused to you as a result of an accident, up to policy limit. The PIP will also cover children that were in the car during the accident, members of the household and certain passengers that do not have PIP policy (if they don’t own a car). This policy covers you not only while driving but also as a pedestrian or a bicyclist.

Property Damage Liability (PDL): minimum coverage required is $10,000.

This coverage comes into play when you are at fault for causing an accident. PDL coverage will pay for damage to the other party’s property or vehicle as a result of the accident. This coverage will not pay for the damage to your own car.

Unfortunately, these limits are extremely low.  We encourage you to explore the additional coverages that will adequately protect your family and your property.

Additional Optional Coverages

According to recent statistics, 50% of Florida drivers carry only the mandatory insurance with minimal limits or drive illegally with no mandatory coverages at all.

This means that you have a 50% chance of being in an accident with a driver who is not able to cover your expenses related to the accident, which can put you in a considerable financial disadvantage. Additional coverages to strongly consider:

Higher limits for PIP and PDL policies  - the state mandates a minimum coverage required, but you can (and should) consider purchasing higher limits for both of these coverages. The limit covers only 80% of the medical bills up to the policy limit and if you need to use the coverage for more than yourself, the cost of medical bills can add up quickly.

Comprehensive and Collision Property Coverages – These coverages will pay for the damage to your car. Remember, PDL coverage, only pays the other party for damage to their vehicle / property. If you do not have these coverages you are essentially agreeing to handle the cost of repairing your vehicle out of pocket.

Uninsured and Underinsured Coverage – As we mentioned above, about 50% of Florida drivers drive either without insurance or with only minimum limits. This coverage will provide coverage for your injuries if the other driver is at fault. Without this coverage, you will only have your PIP benefits.

Bodily Injury Liability If the accident is your fault, you can be sued for additional injuries the other driver or their passengers sustained. The other driver can seek to recover the cost of medical bills, lost wages, rehab treatments etc. While it is an optional coverage we feel it is essential coverage to have to protect yourself financially.
